The state of Hawai‘i continues to mandate a partial inter-island travel 10-day quarantine requirement which applies to all persons traveling to and between the islands of Kaua‘i, Maui, and the island of Hawai‘i. In order to bypass the mandatory quarantine, travels must qualify for an exemption.
Beginning May 11, 2021, individuals fully vaccinated in the State of Hawai‘i may qualify for the vaccination exemption program which allows inter-island travel without pre-travel testing or quarantine starting the 15th day after the completion of their vaccination.
Travelers who arrive in Kauaʻi, Maui and Hawaiʻi counties before they are fully vaccinated or before the 15th day after the completion of their vaccination, will be placed into mandatory quarantine for the full 10 days, unless they meet the criteria for other exceptions.
With this new vaccination exemption program in place, this now allows inter-island travelers three exemption options to avoid the full 10-day quarantine when traveling within the state to the island of Hawai’i:
- Pretest Exemption: Negative pretest 72 hours prior to departure.
Hawai‘i County will ONLY accept Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) from a certified Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) lab test results from TRUSTED TESTING AND TRAVEL PARTNERS up to 72 hours prior to departure, and the traveler receives a negative result.
- Post-arrival Exemption: Take a COVID-19 test after arrival.
Inter-county travelers to Hawai’i County may also break quarantine and elect to get a post-arrival test from a trusted partner. This would require the traveler to remain in quarantine until the negative test is reported and verified.
- Vaccination Exemption: Fully vaccinated and 14 days from the last shot.
Only vaccinations obtained in the State of Hawaii will be accepted. Additionally, inter-island travelers must be fully vaccinated (14-days from your last shot), register in Safe Travels Hawaii, upload your vaccination document to Safe Travels Hawaii (must include vaccination card with the Lot Number of vaccine), and travel with the CDC vaccination card.
Please note the post-arrival and vaccination exemptions do not apply for transpacific travelers.
