Hawaiians have been taking swings at tennis balls since 1894.  But did you know those first tennis balls were red?  It’s true.  In 1895 red balls were imported to Honolulu.  A newspaper reported the balls, “make a very pretty show on the courts during the afternoon but are rather trying on the eyes.”  Luckily the players soon tired of the color and switched to white.

The 8th Annual FilAm Friendship Doubles Tennis Tournament is coming this July to Kailua Kona.  Players from Hawaii and the mainland will be descending on the Holua Tennis Center in Mauna Loa Village on the 19th and 20th.  Tournament categories will include men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles (UTSA rules and regulations).

What about the keikis?  Yes, bring your whole family.  There will be a slew of other activities happening during the two day event.  Try out your backhand to win racquets, tennis bags, hats, and more during the “Hit for Prizes” competition.  Taste “onolicious” Filipino cuisine like pork adobo, pinakbet, lechon, and more.  Bid on vacations, tennis lessons, upscale dinning, and other items during the silent auction.

The tournament is hosted by the Kona Visayan Club, a local non-profit organization.  All proceeds will fund scholarship grants for college-bound Kona high school graduates.  So, come play some doubles tennis and give back to the community.  For more information contact Lovette Llantos at 808.938-3910.
